The Japanese automakers care more for the environment than most American ones. They give you more torque for your fuel consumption, and the better reliability anyways. The Prius is probably the most environmental family vehicle on the market, followed by the Toyota Camry Hybrid edition. The Honda fit and Civic hybrid is also very economical.
If you want a green SUV (I know those words don’t belong in the same sentence) pick the Saturn Vue Greenline for your cash or the Toyota Highlander hybrid for the best fuel economy. A smart car is a good idea really, as long as you have a bigger vehicle like a Kia Sedona (minivan) for family road trips. Lastly, the Toyota Yaris. It really squeezes every last drop out of your gasoline. It is under 20 Grand (including all the taxes and stuff!) and you still get plenty of power (103 lbs of torque) from its 1.5 L engine.
I hope this gives you some pointers on your next vehicle purchase. Remember, the extra cash for a Hybrid will pay you back- in many, many ways.
Efficient cars: They are the focus of today's automakers as consumers start searching for cheaper, low maintenance, and more economical vehicles.
Checking the fuel consumption rating is always a good idea when purchasing new, and you should also consider 'low emission vehicles' or LEVs. They pollute minimally, and surprisingly are not very expensive. If you have an old car, it may be time to trade it in for something new. Now there are all kinds of exciting incentives! Vehicles 5 years and older pollute many, many times over the new models.
